The Remembrance Week (12/11/2008)
This year's month of Remembrance was extremely well supported. Ceremonies were held in the three Commonwealth War Cemeteries in Poland: Malbork, Kraków and Poznań. In Warsaw the ceremony was held in Skaryszenski Park, next to the Liberator Stone. In these cemeteries are the graves of 1,157 members of the Commonwealth who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars. Again this year, each city demonstrated gratitude to the Commonwealth soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom.
It was particularly moving to see the strong support from Polish veterans who valiantly shared in this struggle, and from Polish and British schoolchildren who were impressive parts of each ceremony. This year, Commonwealth Ambassadors, accompanied by the British Defence Attaché, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Nowak, laid a wreath of poppies at each of these ceremonies. The British Ambassador Ambasador HE Mr DR Todd laid a wreath in Warsaw, the Ambassador of South Africa HE Mrs Febe Potgieter-Gqubule laid a wreath in Kraków, the Ambassador of Canada HE Mr David Preston laid a wreath in Poznań and the Ambassadors of Australia and New Zealand, HE Ms Ruth Pearce and HE Dr Penelope Ridings laid a wreath at Malbork.
