UK shares expertise on mass sporting events with Poles

Between 12-14 October 2009, Mr Tadeusz Zygmunt (National Coordinator for Safety) and Beata Jaworska (Marketing Manager) from Poland's Euro 2012 Organising Committee (PL.2012) visited London as part of a Foreign and Commonwealth Office and UK Trade and Investment visit focusing on international sporting events. Other participanting nations included Brazil (Football World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016), Canada (Winter Olympics in 2010) and Russia (Winter Olympics in 2014).

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen ties between the UK and the participating countries and to forge technical co-operation with participating governments and sports authorities. The visit programme focussed particularly on issues such as consular work, safety and security, policing, immigration and customs, all within the context of large international sporting events, especially as the UK builds towards the 2012 Olympics.

The delegation met officials from the FCO, London 2012 Olympics, Metropolitan Police, UK Borders Agency, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, the UK Football Policing Unit, UK Trade and Investment, the Football Association and the Crown Prosecution Service.  They also held detailed discussions with UK firms specialising in the area of safety and security of mass events, ranging from the provision of technical equipment to proper training of stadium volunteers and stewards to successfully hold an event without the need for police inside stadiums themselves.  On the final day of the visit, the delgation also met Lord Triesman (Chair of the Football Association) at Wembley stadium and observed policing and safety procedures from the main control room ahead of the international match between England and Belarus.
