Training for Belsat TV correspondents (29/10/2009)

Belsat TV

The UK has provided funding to Belsat TV to facilitate three training courses for the station's correspondents and presenters, which ran during October.

The courses focussed on preparing news items, including gathering data to help produce interesting and factual reports, plus presentation techniques for both news broadcasts and feature programs. The courses are organised with the participation of leading television specialists from the Polish media market, including professionals working for Polish TV stations (TVP S.A., TVN, TVN24 and Polsat).

The three courses are just some elements of the constant skill improvement program implemented by Belsat (who run about 20 different courses per year).

Belsat TV is the first independent satellite channel for Belarus, broadcasting from Poland via the Astra1KR and Sirius4 satellites. Belsat provides Belarusians with access to independent culture, news and entertainment, paving the way for democratic transition. It is already watched by about 5% of the Belarusian society. It remains the most accessible and attractive method of communication with mass Belarusian audiences.

The vast majority of funding for Belsat comes from the Polish government, with smaller contributions from international donors such as the UK.  In 2008, British Embassy funding was used for both media training and the purchases of television equipment.
