Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General
Paul joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1987 after post-graduate work in Russian and East European Studies at Oxford University. His first job in the FCO was as a Research Analyst in the East European section. He then became Desk Officer for Yugoslavia in the East European Department.
In 1990 he was posted to New Delhi for three years and from there went to Baku, Azerbaijan in 1994 where - as the Deputy Head of Mission - he survived a war and two coups. In 1996 he was posted to Bangkok as a commercial officer.
Having left the UK in 1990 as a single man, he returned in 1999 with a New Zealand wife - Vicki - and two daughters. A third daughter arrived in 2002.
During his time back home he was a Press Spokesman for two Foreign Secretaries (Robin Cook and Jack Straw), deputy head of the department responsible for the UK's relationship with countries of the Western Balkans and finally head of the FCO's Iraq Policy Unit. He arrived in Warsaw in August 2006.
Paul is a football fan but has the misfortune to support Tottenham Hotspur FC. As a trained historian he remains interested in the past and hopes to explore Poland's rich history during his time here.
