Promoting ethnic diversity
Diversity, understanding, openness, these were the leading themes of the British Embassy project „Poznajmy się” (Let’s get to know each other), which was launched in September 2006 and finished in March 2008.
The aim of the project was to promote positive aspects of living in a culturally and nationally diversified society.
“Since the EU enlargement in 2004 a lot of us have been using the opportunity to travel and work freely in different European countries. More and more visitors have been coming to Poland. We work together, we meet, quite often we live next door to one another. This diversity makes our society richer, broadens our horizons and facilitates experience sharing.” – said Agnieszka Tomaszewska, Project Coordinator.
The Project was one of the diversity oriented activities carried out by a number of different institutions, including the European Commission under the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.
All EU Member States must adopt and implement the provisions of the Race Equality Directive. Its purpose is to provide framework for combating racial and ethnic discrimination. The framework will enable introduction of the principle of equal treatment.
According to the Directive combating racial or ethnic discrimination should not be limited only to access to employment or self-employment. It should also address such aspects of social life as healthcare, education or welfare benefits.
The Directive provides that every Member State shall designate a body or an institution for the promotion of equal treatment of all persons without discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin. In the United Kingdom the designated body is the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The Commission’s representatives took part in the "Poznajmy się" project.
