Justice and Home Affairs
Since the Enlargement of the European Union, it is not only the citizens of the EU Member States who benefit from the freedom of movement; unfortunately this privilege is also used by organised crime groups, acting to the detriment of individual member States or the whole Community.
Problems such as people smuggling, illegal migration and drug trafficking are international problems that need international solutions.
Responsibility for JHA is divided between several UK government departments. Responsibility for policy on combating international crime, judicial co-operation in criminal matters and immigration and asylum policy lies with the Home Office. The Justice Ministry (established on 8 May 07) has responsibility for judicial co-operation in civil law. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is responsible for relations with other countries, within the EU or beyond. Other agencies involved include UK Border Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service
